Globalize the World

To me globalization means bringing the whole world together into a global economy.  What I mean by this is that you no longer care where something is produced; you just buy what you need.  Gone will be the days of the “Buy American, don’t By Anything else” mentality.  I believe that this which also help the worlds population by equalizing the living standards in different countries.

I agree most with Thomas Friedman’s The World is Flat, in this novel he talks about globalization.  He came up with the title for his book while interviewing people in Bangalore, for a documentary about outsourcing for the discovery channel.  In his last interview he was told that “The playing field is being leveled, and you Americans aren’t ready.”

On the ride back to his hotel he had an epiphany, he would write a book about globalization and calls it The World is Flat.  In this book he talks about the global supply chain.  This global supply chain is that companies don’t get the pieces for their products from one place.  The companies go all over the globe to find the best price for the component.

He believes that any country that is in the same global supply chain will not go to war with another in the same chain, excluding catastrophic events.  This is very important because this is a shift from old thinking; it shows how countries can change because if they mess up the supply chain they will lose a lot of money.

A great example of this is the Dell example, parts for dells computers are designed in Taiwan and manufactured in China.  If China invades Taiwan, Dell will most likely shift their supply chain around so it won’t involve China anymore.  This would be a huge loss in profits for China.  I watched a video clip of Thomas Freidman on the Charlie Rose show and from that I have decided to read the rest of The World is Flat.
